Native ads on Meta: the static that sells to cold traffic

An iPhone photo and 1,331 words of text. This ad spent almost $2k in its first week.

It looks simple. It isn't. Every native ad has three parts, and each one has a single job.

The 3 parts and their jobs

PartIts job
Image + headlineStop your persona's scroll
Hook (first 2 lines of text)Open a curiosity gap that makes them tap “See more”
Primary textTake them through every awareness stage, from “that's me” to “I need this”

I know, it's hard to believe someone will read that much text and then buy. But nail each part and you'll have a new winner.

How we build each part

1. The image + headline. Ideally a phone photo of something they connect to their problem: part of their daily routine, an object, a scenario. No text, no logo, no product. Just the photo.

Combined with the headline, it should be either super clear or super curious. Both should make them want to read more.

2. The hook. The first two lines of the primary text. They describe the reader's situation and disrupt what they believe (or who they blame) without giving the answer yet.

3. The primary text. Usually a first-person story that does three things:

The story...Why
Changes 3 beliefs: it's not your fault, the real cause is X, and only something with Y fixes XThe reader needs a new explanation before they'll accept a new solution
Answers every objection as something that happened in the storyObjections handled inside a story don't feel like selling
Names the product only at the endSo it reads as the answer, not a pitch

The words matter more than anything here, and the best ones come from your customers. (Where to find them.)

Why statics belong at the top of the funnel

Most brands only use static ads for retargeting: an offer, aimed at the warmest audience. They leave the top of the funnel to video.

I get it. Moving someone through every awareness stage is easier in a video, where you have “unlimited” frames. But it isn't impossible in a static, and the native ad proves it.

Why statics at TOFWhat it gets you
Cheaper to produce and to deliverLower CPMs at a fraction of the production cost, so more profit per ad
Fastest way to test conceptsVideo money only goes to ideas that are already proven
ClarityOne clear message gives Meta a clear signal for who to show it to

Three rules for a TOF static:

  1. Have a real concept. A clear persona, angle and format. (What makes a concept.)
  2. Be extremely clear or extremely curious. Nothing in between.
  3. Make the headline, text and landing page work as a team. The ad's only job can be the click. An advertorial or a custom landing page can do the educating and converting.
