Creative strategy
You're running 30 ads, but Meta thinks you're running 3
Creative diversity isn't about how many ads you make. It's about how many different people they speak to.
Most DTC brands I look at get creative diversity the wrong way.
They ramp up ad volume by adding a new creator, a new product shot, a new hook line, a new background. The ads look different. They aren't different.
How Meta decides two ads are the same
Meta reads who your ad speaks to and finds people who match. If who the ad is for, what they already know, why they'd buy and how it's shown all stay the same, Meta treats it as the same ad. It sends it to the same people the last one reached, and nothing moves.
That's why “we tested 30 creatives and nothing worked” so often means “we tested one idea 30 times.”
What's happening under the hood
Meta's ad delivery runs on a few AI systems working together. You don't need the engineering. You need to know what each one means for the ads you give it.
| System | What it does | What it means for your ads |
|---|---|---|
| GEM | Meta's largest ads model. It learns from how people interact with ads and content across Meta, and teaches the smaller models what makes an ad relevant to a person | Meta understands what your ad says, and who it's for, from the creative itself |
| Andromeda | Narrows millions of possible ads down to the few most relevant to each person | A vague ad has no clear match, so it rarely makes the shortlist |
| Lattice | Predicts how likely each shortlisted ad is to get the result you optimize for | The stronger the prediction, the more often your ad wins the impression |
| Sequence learning | Reads what people do before and after seeing ads as one journey, not isolated moments | Ads for different awareness stages each get a job on the path to purchase |
Put together, it means one thing: the ad is the targeting now. Meta reads your creative to decide who sees it, and interest targeting matters far less than it used to.
And because AI made ads cheap to produce, volume alone stopped being an advantage. Meta doesn't reward more creative. It rewards more intentional creative.
So do you only need 3 ads? No. You need more concepts, not more ads.
What a concept actually is
FormulaConcept = Persona × Awareness × Angle × Format
| Variable | The question it answers |
|---|---|
| Persona | Who is this ad trying to reach? |
| Awareness | How much do they already know about the problem and the solutions? |
| Angle | Why would this person buy? |
| Format | How is it shown? |
Change one and you have a new concept: a new pocket of buyers for Meta to find. (This is the same system we use to build every account, it's on the homepage under Method.)
One serum, three different audiences
Let's imagine a skin serum.
| Persona | Awareness | Angle | Format | Who it reaches | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Concept A | Woman 45+ on Ozempic. Lost 40 lb in 3 months, and her face aged 10 years overnight | Problem aware: can't figure out why her face aged so fast, doesn't connect it to the weight loss | Losing weight shouldn't take your face with it | UGC video | People living the problem without a name for it |
| Concept B (awareness changed) | Same | Product aware: has already seen your serum | Proof it works on skin like hers | UGC video | People ready to order who need proof, not education |
| Concept C (format changed) | Same | Same as A | Same as A | Before and after static | People who skip videos and UGC-style ads |
Three ads, three different audiences. Thirty versions of Concept A with different creators would still be one.
Looks new vs. is new
| Looks new (same concept) | Is actually new |
|---|---|
| A new creator reading the same script | The same product sold to a different persona |
| A new hook line on the same argument | A new angle: a different reason to buy |
| A new background color | A different awareness stage |
| The same video cut three ways | The same idea moved from UGC to a static format |
The one question before your next batch
Before you brief new ads, ask: did I change who, what, why or how?
If not, it's the same ad.
